If you’re looking for niche business ideas for contractors, this article will cover a few things to consider when deciding on a construction niche. One of the things that you need to keep in mind first and foremost is that you want a construction niche that is “an inch wide and a mile deep” meaning its untouched, or touched by very little competition… But in the same breath also has a huge demand…

Now, you can niche down within a niche, which is what we did to build our business, but when your considering niche business ideas for contractors, the first thing you need to know is that beating your competition for any niche you’d like to focus is is relatively simple… Here’s why…

(UPDATE: We’ve added our favorite niche business ideas below… )

Niche Business Ideas For Contractors Only Go As Far As The Contractor Marketing Them…

niche business ideas for contractorsFinding a great niche to build your construction business around is great until most contractors begin the process of marketing that business.

They’ll focus on things like designing the right logo, getting the right business cards printed up, buying the right magnetic decal for their trucks, etc… Which are all great things to have, but have nothing to do with scaling your construction business.

And if you’re looking to actually build a “business”, then scalability is absolutely imperative to your survival and growth.

And best way to begin your marketing efforts is with good ol’ fashioned keyword research. You can think of niche construction ideas forever, but if there isn’t an ounce of demand for your products or services, then you’ll be spending a TON of time trying to find actually buyers and educating the masses on your new “amazing” product/service.

No one really cares how cool or amazing your new product or service is, and if it doesn’t solve a problem that people need fixing right now, then your chances of exposure to the market are slim to none.

One of the more profitable niches that we’ve focused on after mastering our kitchen remodel business, is laminate flooring… Now there are tons of flooring options on the market, but laminate flooring works for us for a few reasons, which are all built around our customer avatar:

People that are looking to purchase laminate flooring are:

  • Landlords
  • Flippers
  • Homeowners On A Budget
  • Mobile Home Owners

Now we could add every single kind of flooring to our catalogue, but with narrowing in on this particular construction niche, and targeting people that we know are more open to purchasing laminate floors than anything else, we’ve been able to comfortably add an extra $5-$10k in profit per month… And all without me having to leave the office 🙂

Niche Business Ideas For Contractors: Selling To Everyone Means You’re Selling To No One

niche business ideas for contractorsOne of the most important things about niche business ideas for contractors is that once you’ve found that niche, you can’t expect to be able to market to the masses without losing your shirt and ever building a profitable business.

Every business that tries to focus on a construction niche through mass media, or anything else that doesn’t allow for testing, tracking, and scaling will end up leaving you getting a job at McDonalds…

The best way for reaching your target audience is through Google…

Facebook is a great tool to, however, it’s horrible for first contact. If you use Facebook in conduction with Google as a means of second exposure through retargeting campaigns, then you’re golden…

But initial contact with your niche clients are going to be through using Google Adwords, Google Places, YouTube (owned by Google) and then finally SEO…

The magic of Google is that its like a phonebook on steroids. You can be right in from of every single prospective client the moment they begin searching for a solution to their problems. And its a solution that you offer. This helps you cut through all of the noise and helps to establish you and your brand as an authority an expert in your construction niche.

And the best part about using Google is the ability to automate the sorting process and never having to force a sale ever again. You’d be selling to people with credit cards in hand ready to buy…

When our clients first reach out to us, they are ready to buy… It with all of the marketing we’ve done on our website, we’ve educated them enough so that they know exactly what they want and what they need to do… After that, it’s nearly a matter of taking their deposit and putting them on our schedule… Very simple to do if you’re consistent…

Niche Business Ideas For Contractors: Find A Construction Niche Without Having Too Many Variables

niche business ideas for contractorsWhen we first started doing kitchen remodels, we would run into problem after problem throughout the entire process. And the hardest thing about it all is that we were trying to take on all of the work ourselves… But then we got smart.

We started hiring specialists in their field to come and help with all of the electrical, gas, plumbing, framing, drywall, paint, etc so that we could solely focus on what we did best, which is cabinets, countertops, backsplash and laminate flooring.

And with separating our trades and bringing in experts that stayed in one lane and didn’t try taking on the world, they are able to get in, do the work, and get out relatively quickly… Actually, a lot faster than us because they’ve been dong it for years while we were the cabinet guys trying to “wing-it”…

And what excited me the most about watching these trades come in and do the work for us is that I realized that they were making money hand over fist staying within the realm of their trade. I watched a plumber put in 2 hours worth of work and charge our client $750 (going rate for that service by the way) with barley breaking a sweat…

Now that’s good money if you ask me…

HERE’S THE UPDATE ON OUR FAVORITE NICHE IDEAS:

QuietCool Whole House Fans:

This is a niche that we initially helped one of our clients get into to supplement his income as an electrician, but it ended up turning into a 200 client per month business that allowed him to generate enough cash for the year in about 3 months (summertime is the most popular)…

QuietCool isn’t the only vendor in town, but it’s worth looking into them first…

Our client generates and extra $200k-$300k every summer from this niche construction business…

Electrical Panel Upgrades:

One of our electrician clients loves to do panel upgrades… One because they’re not too time consuming, two: they range to be about $3,500+ per client.

Much of the cost is labor related, which means cash in your pocket…

Especially if you cab grow the company to the point of hiring a team to manage a few panel upgrades a day… It adds up quick!

Construction Consulting:

This is for the personality type that loves to help & teach and is willing to be on the side and fight for the customer…

Construction consultants can make a few hundred bucks per hour… Just make sure that even though your not technically “contracting” work directly, that you still have a valid contractors license…

The laws (especially here in California) are ALWAYS changing, and they’re always in favor of the homeowner… So make sure you have all of your documentation in place to avoid a S.W.I.F.T. sting operation…

This are no fun…

Become An Installer For Vendors Of Cabinets, Appliances, Fixtures, etc…

If you’re not in the mood or don’t have the drive to learn marketing and customer acquisition, perfect…

Find a company who already has customers, but can’t service them without your help…

The QuietCool example is a prime example..

But you could install cabinets for cabinet manufacturers…

Install countertops for stone suppliers…

Install high end appliances for companies like Wolf/SubZero & Viking…

We’ll be adding more of these ideas as we continue along, but these have been some of the more profitable and low maintenance that we’ve come across this far…
